    David Townsend

I was a Health and Safety Consultant with the Manufacturers’ Trade Association MAKE UK (Formerly EEF) for 15 years, delivering consultancy and training to a wide range of companies from SMEs to Multi Nationals in the manufacturing and service sectors, leaving in 2020.

I am a Chartered Member of IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) and pride myself on giving sensible, proportionate, and practicable advice to companies.  This advice always respects and supports an organisation’s current H&S culture and will put forward realistic timescales for any proposed actions whilst helping address legal compliance.  It is only in this way that organisations will understand and commit to genuine improvements to their health and safety arrangements.

Originally qualified in Business Studies and with subsequent Quality and Commercial experience before progressing within the world of health and safety, I have a very positive grasp on the role health and safety can and must play in supporting the Management of an organisation in achieving their business objectives.

Health and safety must be a positive element in the workplace and not be perceived as a hurdle or hinderance but integrated within positive business decisions. Engagement with staff on a pragmatic and proportionate basis is therefore fundamental in establishing and maintaining a safe and legally compliant working environment.

I enjoy the subject of H&S and my years of experience have shown me that with a positive approach to H&S, organisations truly can reduce the risks of injury and ill health.  Whilst recognising that Production, or Service provision will always be a necessary priority for an organisation, I am always motivated to encourage a company to have arrangements that create a culture that embeds ‘Safe production’ as the way of work.

As well as being a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, I am also a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM Roadsmart). I am proud to have been a member since 1990 and have successfully taken Member assessments/refreshers at regular intervals.  Work related road safety is a major risk for employees and cost for companies but unfortunately too frequently not seen as a priority.  The skills and attitudes promoted by the IAM have helped management of my own work risk of driving considerably and I am happy to share and promote such insights whether in relation to company premises or the open road.

    Location

I am based in the East Midlands but am happy to travel further afield as I have done throughout my career.  I live near the A1 corridor for easy access north to Yorkshire and south to London and all points in between. In heading west I am no stranger to the West Midlands and indeed the West Country and South West where I have family contacts.  My work with Make UK saw me travel throughout the UK visiting Member sites.
